Tooty-fruitty

One of summer's pleasures in Southern Mexico is the fruit pitaya. Vietnam and Malasia, and some other Pacific nations, have discovered this fruit and are cultivating and exporting what they call dragon fruit. And on Facebook Mafia Wars game, in Cuba, dragon fruit is given as a bonus on jobs done.
Me, I've embarked on some cultivation of my own. Jose Flores placed cuttings in my garden two years ago. Mostly, they were not pretty and took to climbing the walls. The main stem looked it was broken when we started emptying potting soil in the corner of the garden, with the papaya tree at the other end.
The flowers lasted only a few hours and I was remiss in not grabbing the camera. But rains were here and well, I thought, no harm in waiting.
The next day, the flowers were gone and little button like bumps appeared. Didn't catch those either. But now, there are fast growing fruits that at this stage look like artichokes.

They are growing inches in days. Today is sunny. The fruits are going to love it!
My worker is now back to painting the roof. He'll pick a couple papayas on his way in and, with the market bought pitaya, we will have a nice fruit salad for lunch's desert. No need to spend more money than the 50 pesos for the pulled pork, of which there is plenty left. I feel like I'm living the green life! Green Acres is the place for me...

Sunday: Routine fun!

Ron and Kathy from Portland came by for Sunday brunch. An easy thing for the hostess, when it's conchinita pibil day and my main man now has a whole room next to his meat shop just to sell from for this Sunday tradition.

They checked the status of my papaya tree, slowly growing its fruits!

And then were were off to Zama Beach Club for dark beer and quesadillas. Kathy and I enjoyed the chilly pools!

I took a siesta and then the Salinases arrived! Ooops. I had a calendar error, repeatedly using the same wrong arrival day. Since it was a long trip from the San Francisco Bay area, they took a nap and off we went to Daisy and Raul's. They got some churros at el parque to go with French roast coffee for breakfast, and are off to Playa Norte. Gilberto and I have a date to go to Marma! And then tonight, Ron and Kathy, and probably the Salinases and I will go to Miguel's, to verify he makes the bests mojitos on Isla Mujeres. Now that Kathy and Ron have a reference point!

Bearing fruit

Not all fruits are obvious. Above are the seeds of a non-cocount bearing palm. Similar palms' seeds are treated as nuts, cocoyol, and boiled in honey for the holidays.
Fruits are now setting on the mystery plant in my garden. It is indeed a papaya.

The fruits are tiny now. But with the rains, growing daily. Is is a yummy papaya or a so-so papaya? I'll let you know soon, I hope.
Tonight is the big Lora's First Anniversary bash. We went last night for a site survey, and she said it was fine. Doggy Daddy Miguel open up a can of dog food and was amazed at how fast she woofed it down.
I wrapped dog treats, chews and cat treats to sell as fundraisers for Amigos los Animales and PEACE-Isla Mujeres. And this morning, Jose and I put a few more fliers out and then he disposed of gasoline/thinner from cleaning the generator and washed out the can. I did a load of laundry and hung it since the low front that has hung here for a few days is scheduled to move on.
Jose also cleaned the roof and washed some pool filters. I made us eggs with chaya and pepper jack cheese, tomatoes and chilis. And we split a bagel. He's getting the hang of them now!
